There was a time when receiving an invitation meant something. I am not sure when this changed. But I have noticed that it has changed. I have sent numbers of invitations to persons inviting them to participate in some initiative or to provide support to some cause and many have fallen on seemingly deaf ears. Requests go unanswered. Invitations are never mentioned. RSVP’s are all but ignored.
Maybe we are just too busy. Maybe other concerns occupy our disposable time. Perhaps it is the fact that we are so inundated with invitations from social media that we have become desensitized to the care and consideration that goes into sending or extending an invitation. Whatever the reason, there has been a marked shift in the response and attention given to invitations.
This invitation from our Lord and Savior, however, should not go ignored. He invites us to come to Him and He will give us rest. In this wonderful 28th verse of Matthew 11. Jesus invites us to “come unto me, all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” What a blessed invitation. What a comforting word of rest and restoration. “Come unto me.” What a wonderful reminder that when we are weary and carrying heavy burdens we have a resource Who can carry our burdens. We have at our disposal a shoulder big enough to carry any problems we face and any plight we encounter. And what I love most about this invitation is that it is not an exclusive invitation.
This invitation does not carry with it the connotation that there will be any reserved seating. This invitation does not denote that only V.I.P’s need respond. This invitation is for all who are willing to come. This invitation is for everyone who dare, RSVP to this divine call for rest and restoration. This invitation is for any and everybody.
So, if you are weary. If you are tired of trying to carry the burdens of this life on your own. If you have realized, on some level, that there are some things you cannot handle on your own. I invite you today to seriously heed this call to come to Him and take His yoke upon you. And allow Him to “teach you” because as He says, “I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Won’t you come today? Won’t you respond to this generous offer laced with grace and mercy? If so, you will find the rest, restoration and relief which you have been seeking.
