A church cannot claim to be healthy while remaining silent about what harms people.
The gospel addresses personal sin, but it also confronts the powers, practices, and systems that deny human dignity. If our preaching only corrects individuals while ignoring injustice, we present a gospel smaller than the one Jesus proclaimed.
Personal Sin Must Be Confronted
The church must call people to repentance, holiness, and new life in Christ. Pride, greed, hatred, dishonesty, and indifference damage our relationship with God and one another. Spiritual vitality requires personal transformation.
Systems Must Be Examined
Sin doesn’t remain personal. It becomes embedded in laws, policies, institutions, and accepted practices. Racism, poverty, exploitation, unequal education, and unjust access to health care cannot be addressed through personal kindness alone.
Silence Is Also a Message
When the church refuses to address public suffering, those who are wounded may hear that their pain doesn’t matter. Silence can protect comfort while leaving injustice undisturbed. Prophetic witness names what is wrong and calls people toward what is right.
Truth Must Lead to Faithful Action
Prophetic ministry is more than strong language from the pulpit. Churches must educate people, serve affected communities, build partnerships, advocate for change, and stand beside those carrying the greatest burden.
A healthy church helps people turn from sin while also challenging the conditions that allow suffering to continue.
Prophetic witness isn’t a distraction from the gospel. It is one way the church makes the justice, mercy, and love of God visible in the world.
