Ministers can spend time in Scripture without allowing Scripture to spend time in them.
We study the text to preach.
We search for the structure.
We develop the movements.
We identify the illustration.
We prepare something for the people.
But devotional reading asks a different question:
What is God saying to me before I decide what I should say to someone else?
Study Can Become Work
For ministers, Bible reading can quietly become professional.
Every passage starts looking like a sermon. Every insight becomes teaching material. Every revelation gets measured by whether it will preach.
There is nothing wrong with preparing faithfully. The church deserves ministers who study.
But if Scripture only becomes material for ministry, the leader may learn how to explain the Word without remaining personally submitted to it.
Devotion Brings Us Under the Word
In devotional reading, we aren’t standing over the text asking how to use it.
We stand under the text and allow it to search us.
Where am I resisting God?
What must I confess?
What promise do I need to trust?
What attitude must change?
What step of obedience is God requiring?
The Word must reach the minister before it reaches the ministry.
Keep Something for Your Soul
Not everything God gives you is meant for Sunday.
Some words are for your healing.
Some are for your correction.
Some are for your encouragement.
Some are for a private season that no one else needs to understand.
A healthy devotional life gives the minister a place to meet God without immediately turning the encounter into content.
Let the Word Form You
The people we lead need more than biblical information from us. They need the fruit produced when Scripture has corrected our pride, calmed our fears, shaped our decisions, and changed our conduct.
We should study to preach accurately.
We should also read to live faithfully.
Before the Word becomes a message through you, allow it to become a transforming word within you.
