Leadership can train us to remain strong in front of people.
We answer questions, solve problems, calm fears, make decisions, preach hope, and keep moving. People often encounter the version of us that is prepared to lead.
But every leader needs a place where the title comes off.
Devotion should be that place.
God Does Not Need the Public Version of You
You don’t have to impress God with polished prayers.
You can tell Him you are tired.
You can admit that you are afraid.
You can confess that criticism hurt you.
You can acknowledge that you don’t know what to do.
You can bring the anger, disappointment, temptation, grief, and confusion you cannot carry into a leadership meeting.
God already knows what is happening within you. Devotion gives you space to become honest about it.
Unspoken Emotions Still Lead
What leaders refuse to acknowledge does not disappear.
Hidden hurt can become harshness.
Unexamined fear can become control.
Unprocessed disappointment can become cynicism.
Unconfessed insecurity can become a need for praise.
Prayer allows us to bring those emotions before God before they begin directing our leadership.
Devotion Restores Identity
A ministry title tells people what we do.
Devotion reminds us who we are.
Before we are pastors, preachers, teachers, directors, ministers, or ministry leaders, we are children of God. Our worth does not rise with attendance or fall with criticism.
We are loved before we lead.
We are held before we perform.
We belong to God before we accomplish anything for God.
Lead From Wholeness
The devotional life is not an escape from leadership. It is where leadership becomes honest.
God meets us beneath the role, heals what leadership has bruised, corrects what success has distorted, and strengthens what responsibility has drained.
People do not need leaders who pretend to have no weakness.
They need leaders whose weakness has taught them how to depend upon God.
The leader who has nowhere to be honest will eventually lead from what remains hidden
